Nursing Education Blogs
·         Can complement teaching… develop reflective practice
·         Useful when learner and educator are not in immediate location from one another
·         Equalize the discussion…face-to-face may be dominated by only a few participants
Patient Blogs
·         Patient insight and perspective on illness
·         Help improve communication between patients, families and healthcare providers
·         Highlight commonalities and differences in healthcare practice

Cons

·         Linear sequence of posts… Can’t be grouped around a topic like in a discussion board
·         Time consuming to read and respond
·         Mainly opinion based postings… difficult to assess quality of what is posted
·         Educational organization may be hesitant to use this informal method of learning
·         Avoid sharing personal information…Maintain HIPAA regulations about sharing patient information

Staying Up to Date

·        Email reminders and postings

·        Relate classroom discussion to what is being discussed on the blog
·        Instructions to help with technical challenges
